I'm reasonably sure that the nerd-o-sphere has had some time to hear about and digest the news concerning the recent Thundercats revival to air on the Cartoon Network.
Now, I am in no way against a reboot of the classic 80's cartoon. WB, Bandai and Cartoon Network should, by all means, reintroduce these characters to a new generation of consumers...I mean...fans. But, see, Thundercats was something that I was REALLY into as a kid, so I'd like to offer up some advice.
Keep it weird! Some of the greatest things about the original Thundercats was just how strange it was. Cat aliens, mystical science, ghosts (I'm looking at you Jaga), prophecy, a black magic mummy who turned into a freakin' SUPER-Mummy! Not to mention mutants, and a character whose main weapon was a cat o'three tails whip that could also turn him invisible! And all of this happens on some kind of WAAAY post-apocalyptic Earth where there are strange big-eyed tree women and a village of robotic bears.
A village. Of robotic. Bears!
Will we see reinterpretations of the trials of Lion-O? Where he had to out fight Panthro, run faster than Cheetara, out "mind" Tygra, and out-wile WilyKit & Kat? By Jaga's beard I hope so!
Will we see that creepy episode where Lion-O gets trapped underground and is beset upon by pale, blind children who just want him to read to them? Ancient spirits of evil, let it come to pass!
PLEASE, Warner Bros., Cartoon Network, and Bandai...PLEASE bring back the oddness that was the Astral Moat Monster, or the Tounge-a-saurus (which I don't even remember!)!
By all means keep the good v. evil stuff. Make the good guys good and the bad guys bad. Design claw gloves and Swords of Omens that would make great toys, but keep the one thing that always set Thundercats apart from the rest of the cartoons on TV. Keep it weird!

Though the original series was just before my time, I'm all about keeping the weird. And from the sounds of your description...the old series was full of awesome weird.
ReplyDeleteBut..something tells me they are just going to crank the ACTION up to 11 and rape the fun, fantasy elements for their inherent toy/figurine/collectable potential.
Definitely strange stuff. However, I don't recommend actually watching them, they're pretty cheesy, especially the dialog. But there were a lot of cool ideas being tossed around.
